Nigel joined our Dunedin Project Strategy and Delivery team in 2017 and has since been promoted to Southern Industrial Manger. He shares why Dunedin makes a great place to raise a family and how his work as a project manager helps to make every day better for our industrial clients.

1. What attracted you to Beca?

I had been working with Beca as a client for a few years. Through my interactions, I'd noticed how close the team was despite being from different offices and countries. So, when I was looking at getting back into project delivery, I approached Beca to see if any opportunities were available.

2. What factors did you weigh up when considering your move to Beca's Dunedin office?

Location, friendliness and the opportunity and challenge to grow the lower South Island business for Beca, particularly in the industrial sector were the main factors. Dunedin is a great place to live and raise a family. Yes, it can get a bit cold in the winter but just buy a coat… and remember it is only 10mins to get anywhere!

3. What opportunities do you see in the region?

It's an exciting time to be in the southern region. With our collaborative approach we can support and strengthen our industrial business and the Beca brand locally.

4. What gets you out of bed every morning?

For me, I love the challenge of finding and delivering solutions for clients. If you do it well, you can become their number one solution provider which is why I got back into project management and consulting.

5. How does the work you do ‘make everyday better’ for our clients and communities?

I would like to think that I make a difference each day through project management and supporting our clients’ projects. I believe that we can make each day better by just being good people and respecting each other, and that is definitely true of the people at Beca.

6. What advice would you give to graduates or (other) developing professionals?

Work hard to better yourself and show a willingness to learn without having to be asked or told all the time. Don’t sit back and wait to be told. Be innovative, show initiative and ask lots of questions, you might make the odd mistake, but fail fast and learn from them quickly.

7. What does the next 12 months hold for you?

I'm motivated to progress at Beca and support the business in the southern region along with developing Beca’s position in the New Zealand industrial industry.

NIGEL'S WORDS OF WISDOM

Be innovative, show initiative and ask lots of questions, you might make the odd mistake, but fail fast and learn from them quickly.
