Marcus Jaques started out at Beca as a summer intern in New Zealand. Not long after graduating from university he moved to Melbourne, Australia to take a role as a Civil Engineer in our Airports team. Fast forward a few years and he is now Team Leader working on airport capital and maintenance projects. His previous experience as a contractor has given him a great understanding of how pavement construction occurs on site, and how to minimise disruption to their operating airfield.

1. What company value resonates with you most and why?

Partnership. What I most enjoy about working in the airports team is the partnership we have on all our projects. The people are fantastic and support each other, and the office banter makes it super enjoyable. It makes getting through challenges on a project possible. I consider my team as friends.

2. Can you tell me about an opportunity you’ve had at Beca that has shaped your role or career right now?

Getting early exposure to working with clients and contractors at Wellington International Airports in New Zealand has really set me up and instilled some important skills. I learnt how to have great working relationships. We work as a super collaborative group and considered the client and contractor part of the team and fun along the way.

3. Provide three words that best describe your team culture

Collaborative, fun and diligent.

4. How do you leverage flexibility at Beca?

I feel comfortable working different hours when needed. When I have appointments, I don’t need to feel guilty about coming in late and leaving early; our approach to working from home is very supportive.

5. How does it feel to be a part of our airports team?

It’s exciting! There are a lot of great projects going on which means loads of fantastic opportunities coming our way. I am always learning from others in our team both on a technical and personal level - having the opportunity to learn from those in our team has been exciting.

6. What are the most attractive attributes about working at Beca?

I am here to do a good job and enjoy working at high level to deliver quality work to our clients. The culture here at Beca positively influences a culture that helps to achieve, deliver and exceed our clients’ expectations.

7. Tell us about your opportunities to go abroad with Beca?

I started in back in the Wellington office and now work in the Melbourne office. It was never an issue and it was encouraged for me to join the team here and get out of my comfort zone. Beca promotes mobility and flexibility, and my managers were supportive of my ambition and career goals and helped to make them happen.

8. Tell us about your experience when joining the airports team?

I felt really welcomed by the team. I’ve got to know everyone professionally and socially and really enjoyed it since.

9. What advice would you give to anyone thinking of joining Beca?
