Holcim's lease for a prime industrial site in Singapore’s Jurong Port had ended and the landlord was keen to regenerate the space for future greenfield development. Successfully demolishing a large cement terminal proved key to making this happen.

This is where Beca got involved, providing our expertise in the form of tender management, risk review, site safety monitoring, technical definition and overall project and cost management services.

Stretching over 11 months, our Industrial team, led by Project Manager David Stephens, worked meticulously to carefully demolish this complex cement terminal site – which included a 14 storey office block, ship unloader, conveyors, plus 60 disused cement siloes, with the main structure measuring 30 metres wide and 67 metres high.

One of the main challenges faced was the constrained physical environment the team had to work within – with just 5 metres separating the siloes from neighbouring properties. The post-tensioned construction also meant extra caution had to be taken to ensure metal tendons within the silo walls were properly bonded, preventing pieces of concrete flying off into the distance!

Despite these technical challenges and confined spaces, this demolition project was delivered on time and on budget, before being handed back to a happy landlord who now has a prime regenerated site ready for a new lease of life!

In the words of Holcim's Mr Shankar Muniandy, "Beca's understanding of Lafarge Holcim requirements and commitment to achieving very positive outcomes resulted in the project being a safe and wonderful success for our business".
